Background - What is cyber security risk management?
Cybersecurity risk management involves the continuous identification, analysis, evaluation and resolution of your organization's cybersecurity risks. The job of cybersecurity risk management doesn't just fall to the security team. Everyone in an organization has a part to play. Employees and business unit leaders often view risk management as a business function. This is often a siloed approach. They lack the holistic view necessary to manage risk in a consistent and comprehensive manner, regrettably.
So who is responsible for security risk? Everyone shares ownership and responsibility, that's the short answer. It gets more complicated when there are four business functions involved. Each function has its own agenda and often only limited empathy for others. IT is a leader with new ideas and new technologies. Security and compliance are often seen as a roadblock to progress.
While security is well-aware of safety, they are often not up to date with the latest regulations and technologies. Sales staff are looking to make their customers happy and are searching for a way to efficiently complete security audits. Compliance is keen to protect everyone and ensure compliance with strict compliance to regulations. However, they often operate without a deep understanding of security.
Security risk management requires that all functions have clearly defined roles and are given specific responsibilities. No more siloed departments that stumble along in disorganized confusion. The current risk landscape demands a coordinated, consistent, organized, and disciplined management solution. Here are the key components of risk management that all organizations should keep in mind.
- - Implementation of solid policies and tools to evaluate vendor risk
- - Identification of emerging risks, such new regulations that have business impact
- - Identification of internal weaknesses, such as a lack of two-factor authentication
- - IT risk mitigation, including training programs and new policies.
- - Test of the overall security posture
- - Documentation of vendor risk management, security and compliance for regulatory examinations or to placate potential customers
