The Police groeide begin jaren 80 uit tot een wereldwijd tourfenomeen en is een meervoudig bekroonde groep – tot nu toe twee Brit Awards, zes Grammy's en een MTV Video Music Award. In 2003 werd de band opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. De band nam slechts vijf studioalbums op (waarvan er vier op de Rolling Stone-lijst van de 500 beste albums aller tijden stonden), maar produceerde ook een buitengewoon aantal commerciële successen en door critici geprezen hitsingles.
