De Ilex altcalerensis 'Golden King' is een groenblijvende boom en kan een hoogte tot circa 7 meter bereiken. Het heeft een opgaande groeiwijze met een piramidale kroon. Het glanzende, donkergroene blad is langwerpig, ovaalvormig met een geelbonte, stekelige bladrand. In mei-juni verschijnen er onopvallende witte bloemen in trossen aan de plant. Na de bloei ontwikkelen zich rode bessen. Ilex altcalerensis 'Golden King' houdt van een plaats in de zon of halfschaduw. Hij groeit het best op een goed doorlaten, humusrijke, licht zure, vochtige en zandige bodem. Deze plant verdraagt een temperatuur van -15 °C. De bladeren, loten en de bloemen worden dikwijls aangetast door kolonies van verschillend gekleurde bladluizen. Let op; bepaalde plantdelen zijn giftig.
