Discover the art of traditional knife-making through this comprehensive instructional material from the historic John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. This class, focusing on the Samuel Bell knife-making tradition, offers detailed insights into crafting fine knives in the style of the renowned 19th-century craftsman. Samuel Bell (1798-1882) was celebrated for his exceptional work as a silversmith and knife maker, particularly known for his high-quality Dirk knives made in San Antonio.
The course material, taught by experienced instructors at the Folk School's dedicated blacksmith shop, covers traditional knife-making techniques and processes. The Folk School, established in 1925, maintains its commitment to preserving traditional crafts through hands-on learning experiences. This instructional content provides valuable knowledge for both aspiring and experienced knife makers interested in historical crafting methods.
From the Author: Chuck Patrick and I taught the above Class at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC in January of 2007. Samuel Bell made knives in Knoxville, TN and moved to San Antonio, TX. You will learn to forge these small Dirks with the longitudinal grooves and delicate Spanish Notches. Samuel Bell was an accomplished silversmith who made silver spurs for Sam Houston. Chuck and I show you how to make these knives with simple handles. I want to thank Mark Zalesky for allowing us to use his knives in this class.
