Genuine Bosch 12-volt black high-energy ignition coil, 3.4 ohm primary resistance. Designed for use with stock points ignition or compatible electronic ignition modules on 12V air-cooled VWs and other vintage European vehicles. EMPI part #00-9575-0 (Bosch 9244771008).
Why the Bosch Black coil
The Bosch Black is the modern high-energy version of the classic Bosch automotive coil line. It produces a stronger, more consistent spark than older oil-filled coils, particularly at higher RPM and under load, while remaining fully compatible with stock VW points ignition. For owners who want Bosch reliability with slightly improved performance over the standard Blue coil, the Black is the upgrade path.
The 3.4 ohm primary resistance is in the same range as the factory-spec coils, which means it works with stock points and most electronic ignition modules without requiring a ballast resistor.
Specifications
- Voltage: 12 volts
- Primary resistance: 3.4 ohms
- Construction: Sealed / high-energy
- Color: Black
- Brand: Bosch (German OE supplier)
- OE cross-reference: Bosch 9244771008
- Part number: 00-9575-0
Fitment
- 12-volt VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3, Bus, and Thing with stock points ignition
- Air-cooled VWs converted from 6V to 12V electrical
- Vintage Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, and other 12V points-ignition vehicles using a 3.0–3.5 ohm coil
Will NOT work for: 6-volt electrical systems (use a 6V coil instead). Confirm electronic ignition compatibility before pairing with low-resistance-required modules like MSD or Pertronix Ignitor III.
FAQ
Black vs Blue Bosch coil — what's the difference?
The Bosch Blue is a long-standing oil-filled coil; the Bosch Black is a sealed high-energy design with slightly hotter spark output. Both are 12V and roughly the same resistance range. For a numbers-correct restoration, the Blue is more period-correct. For a daily-driven car where slightly hotter spark is a plus, the Black is the better choice.
Will this work with Pertronix Ignitor?
Yes, with the standard Ignitor (Ignitor I). For Ignitor II and III, check Pertronix's coil resistance requirements — those modules typically want a lower-resistance coil.
Can I mount it in any orientation?
Yes. Sealed high-energy coils don't have the upright-only requirement that oil-filled coils have.
Is the bracket included?
Listings vary — confirm at order. The Black coil typically uses a standard VW coil bracket if you're replacing an existing Bosch coil.
What's the OEM cross-reference?
Bosch 9244771008. Useful when sourcing or cross-checking against vintage parts manuals.
