In conceiving this chair, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were inspired by the forms of plants and by examples of historical seating furniture that referred closely to natural forms or were even built from rough branches. The organic shapes of the Bouroullecs’ original drawings were translated over several years in painstaking collaboration with the furniture maker Vitra. This process took into consideration the requirements necessary for successful mass production of the concept using injection-molding technology. The adaptation of the chair’s forms through an iterative process of working and reworking drawings, computer renderings, and models resulted in a piece that both satisfies the brothers’ desire to use plantlike branching as a principle of construction and respects the utility and geometry of a seating form. The fluid, flattened branches appearing to grow up and through the seat’s structure are shaped into a comfortable and practical stacking chair for use indoors or out.
