Background - What is child protection and wellbeing?
The responsibility for child protection in Australia lies with the state and territory governments. Every department is responsible for helping vulnerable children who have been or are at-risk of being abused, neglected, or otherwise hurt, or whose parents are unable or unwilling to provide the necessary care and protection.
About 178,800 children under 18 years old received child protection services in 2020-21. These services include investigations, care and protection orders, and/or placements for out-of-home child care. This is 32 children per 1000. NSW Health is committed in promoting the safety, health and well-being of children and youth.
Children and young adults are among the most vulnerable in society. NSW Health workers must be able to identify, consult, and respond to any child or young person at risk of serious harm (ROSH).
Children and young adults are at high risk for significant harm due to the following:
- - Domestic and family violence
- - Abuse of any kind, including sexual and/or physical.
- - Neglect
The 1998 Children and Young Persons Protection and Care Act imposes the legal responsibility on NSW Health workers to:
- - Collaborate with interagency agencies and NGOs to improve the safety, welfare, and well-being of children and youth
- - Report children and adolescents who are at significant risk of serious harm
Aims and Objectives of this course
This course Work collaboratively to maintain an environment safe for children and young people (based on CHCPRT003) will help you earn the skills necessary to perform work requirements according to legal, political and community expectations of child protection work and to demonstrate understanding of the child protection system, roles and responsibilities of key agencies.
Our Work collaboratively to maintain an environment safe for children and young people course is based on the unit of competency of CHCPRT003. Whilst this course is not nationally recognized, it follows the learning outcomes and elements associated with that unit. The course contains
- Narrated e-learning learning resources online
- Online Assessment tasks
- Ability to download your Certificate of Completion once assessment tasks are completed
What will you learn by completing the training course?
This course will include an understanding of awareness of the relevant legislation and your responsibilities in working collaboratively to maintain an environment safe for children and young people.
Learning outcomes include:
- Recognise the impacts of child abuse and neglect in the processes of investigation and assessment
- Conduct all work within agreed guidelines of collaborative practice
- Prioritise experiences of child when supporting needs, rights and interests of the child
- Acknowledge and manage challenges of child protection work in a collaborative practice framework
- Apply effective safe work and self-management strategies in child protection duties
- Identify risk factors for families and support them to address these risks
- Respond appropriately to children and families with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- Develop effective working relationships with agencies supporting children and families from diverse backgrounds
- Liaise and consult with other agencies and personnel as appropriate
- Provide referrals to support families
How Is the Training Delivered?
Work collaboratively to maintain an environment safe for children and young people course is available online and completed in your own time. This Work collaboratively to maintain an environment safe for children and young people training course is based on the learning outcomes outlined above.
The course is typically designed to be completed in a minimum of four hours. However, the exact length of the course may depend on your ability and prior knowledge around the subject.

What Accreditation Will You Get?
After completing the Work collaboratively to maintain an environment safe for children and young people course, an assessment is conducted to determine if you have understood the information presented during the training course. If you pass this assessment, you receive a Certificate of Completion.
IMPORTANT NOTE whilst this course is based on the learning outcomes of the course provided, it is important to note that it is not a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment unless you opt for that option. Nationally Recognised training is only really required If you specifically require that unit of competency for a qualification or licence (typically this will require a practical component, further assessment and increased costs).
This course has been designed to comply with the best practices of national health and safety standards. Terminology has been chosen for clarity and ease of comprehension across jurisdictions. For example, ‘employer’ has been used to signify the broader term ‘PCBU’, while ‘WHS’ represents both work and occupational health and safety.
This training is not a substitute for professional legal advice. If you require further advice or information, please contact the health and safety regulator in your jurisdiction. A Certificate of Completion is issued on successful completion of the course and you are required to get an 80% pass mark to be deemed as understanding the content. It is recommended that training is conducted every 2 years to stay refreshed.
