Dell Networking 100GbE QSFP28 SR4 Transceiver — MMF MPO-12, No FEC

The Dell Networking 100GbE QSFP28 SR4 transceiver is a hot-pluggable fiber optic module designed to deliver high-density 100 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks in data centers and enterprise networks. With an MPO-12 connector and a QSFP28 form factor, this SR4 transceiver provides four parallel 25 Gbps lanes, enabling true 100GbE links over multimode fiber up to 100 meters. Built to work seamlessly with Dell Networking switches, it offers a reliable upgrade path for expanding switch fabric capacity without sacrificing performance or reliability. Whether you’re refreshing a crowded rack, upgrading spine-leaf fabrics, or strengthening intra-data center connectivity, this transceiver is engineered for dependable, plug-and-play operation in Dell environments.

  • High-density 100GbE SR4 solution: Four parallel 25 Gbps lanes (4x25G) deliver a true 100GbE link, optimized for short-reach data center deployments over multimode fiber (MMF). This architecture preserves switch fabric bandwidth, reduces cabling complexity, and integrates smoothly with spine-leaf designs to scale performance while minimizing latency and power consumption.
  • QSFP28 hot-pluggable form factor: Easily swap or upgrade transceivers in Dell switches with no heavy downtime, minimizing service interruptions. The hot-pluggable design supports in-service maintenance, rapid provisioning, and streamlined lifecycle management for busy data centers and enterprise networks.
  • MPO-12 multimode fiber interface: Designed for wideband multimode fiber cabling, enabling robust, scalable uplinks with clean, high-bandwidth transmission. MPO-12 compatibility aligns with standard fiber harnesses, enabling tidy cabling and flexible patching across racks and cabinets.
  • MMF compatibility up to 100 m: Supports up to 100 meters on OM3/OM4 fiber, making it ideal for intra-data center links and top-of-rack deployments. This reach supports most enterprise and data-center topologies while preserving signal integrity across the link.
  • No FEC capability: This module does not implement forward error correction, so your network design should rely on your switch’s FEC capabilities or choose a transceiver with FEC if required for your environment. This helps keep the module compact and cost-efficient while delivering high performance where FEC is managed at the system level.

How to install Dell Networking, Transceiver, 100GbE QSFP28 SR4, No FEC Capable, MPO, MMF

  • Verify compatibility: Confirm that your Dell Networking switch and QSFP28 port support 100GbE SR4 transceivers and MMF fiber. Check the device’s compatibility matrix and ensure the uplink port is configured for 100GbE/ SR4 operation.
  • Prepare the fiber cabling: Use high-quality multimode fiber with MPO-12 connectors (MTP/MPO). Ensure fibers are clean, undamaged, and properly terminated at both ends. Use a clean patch cord and connectors to prevent insertion losses.
  • Static protection and handling: Ground yourself and use ESD protection when handling the transceiver. Hold the module by its edges and avoid touching the optical surfaces or contact pins.
  • Insert the transceiver: Align the QSFP28 module with the switch’s uplink port and insert it firmly until it seats with a click. Do not apply excessive force; if it does not seat, remove and reseat carefully.
  • Connect the fiber: Attach an MPO-12 MMF fiber patch cord between the transceiver and the corresponding patch panel or another QSFP28 port. Route the fiber to minimize bending and maintain clean corner radii to preserve signal integrity.
  • Power and verify: If your device requires power cycling, perform a controlled restart. After insertion, verify link status via front-panel LEDs or management software. Run basic connectivity tests (pings, throughput tests) to confirm 100GbE SR4 connectivity.
  • Troubleshooting: If you do not see a link, reseat the transceiver, inspect the fiber for damage or contamination, check fiber polarity, and confirm that both ends are configured for the same SR4/100GbE settings.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: What does SR4 mean in this Dell transceiver? A: SR4 stands for short-reach 4-lane operation, using four 25 Gbps signals to deliver a true 100GbE link over multimode fiber. It is intended for intra-data center deployments with MMF cabling up to 100 meters, depending on fiber grade and patching.
  • Q: Is the transceiver compatible with non-Dell switches? A: While the module is designed to Dell QSFP28 SR4 specifications, it can interoperate with other equipment that supports QSFP28 SR4 and MPO-12 MMF interfaces. Always verify the target device’s compatibility matrix and whether FEC or other link-level features are required.
  • Q: What fiber type should I use? A: Multimode fiber (MMF) is required for SR4 links. Use OM3 or OM4 fiber to maximize reach and bandwidth; OM4 generally offers better performance with higher tolerance to bending and longer distance in some installations.
  • Q: Does this transceiver include FEC? A: No. The transceiver itself does not implement forward error correction; FEC is typically handled by the switch or fabric controller if needed for your deployment’s reliability requirements.
  • Q: Can I use this transceiver for longer distances? A: The listed distance is up to 100 meters on MMF. For longer distances, you would typically use a different transceiver type (such as LR4) that is designed for single-mode fiber or longer MMF runs.
  • Q: How do I know I’m selecting the right Dell part? A: Look for the Dell Networking, QSFP28 SR4, MMF MPO-12 designation and verify the SKU/UPC with your procurement or Dell catalog. Always cross-check the compatibility with your switch model and the intended fiber infrastructure.

Informative
Format: Paperback
This book was one of several college informaion books I checked out from our local library. This one was the best - informative, objective and not-too-lengthy or not-too-short for each important element of college selection and application processes. So, I decided to buy one to keep at home. I wish the paper is thicker and better quality. Whenever I use highlighter, it got through its back-page.

Excellent advice
Format: Paperback
I've been working in College Student Affairs for almost 10 years (admissions & academic advising.) I bought this as a gift for my godson, who was a sophomore in high school at the time. I chose this book because it didn't put pressure on kids to pick the big name school with the highest price tag they were accepted to. It gave good advice bout finding out and figuring out what schools would be a good "fit" for them. It also had some good advice about taking & prepping for the SATs - which made it a good choice fod my godson even though he is a couple years away from filling out his applications!

Highly Recommended
Format: Paperback
Superb book that eased my parental anxieties and has proven very helpful to my college-applicant daughter. Even though it was published in 2011, it is *not* dated (something I worried about). Sure, it will probably need an update by 2020 or so, but most of the info is not very time-sensitive to begin with.

Good place to start
Format: Paperback
I am an independent college adviser based in California and I recommend this book to my clients but only at the very beginning of the process (mostly to the parents of rising high school freshmen and sophomores). This book is a good place to start especially for many of the foreign educated or immigrant families, who are new to the US College Admission process. The parents do tell us that the book loses its effectiveness once they gain knowledge of the process and/or they begin working one-on-one with an independent and/or become more conscious about meeting the high school counselors early in the process. I personally like the fact that once this book is overviewed by the families, we can spend more time addressing specific concerns and giving more customized advice. As a result we only need quarterly meetings and these meetings are extremely targeted. The problem with this book though is it reads like a huge information session by colleges. Those of you who have attended some of the information sessions will know what I mean. The insights provided by the deans and admission officers of various colleges sound somewhat like a "sales pitch" at times and at other times are misleading. I also recommend my students to keep their knowledge up to date by referring to various free resources such as Nancy Griesemer's educational articles in Washington Examiner Online, or the Choice Blog. I spend considerable time volunteering my services at a high school in a mixed/low income neighborhoods; I wish the price had been more reasonable considering that this is a basic book. Lastly as members of NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counseling), all of us in the admissions field (College Admission Officers, High School Counselors, and Independent Counselors) subscribe to certain codes of ethics and one of the Statements of Good Practice says this about Fairness and Equity: We believe our members have a responsibility to treat one another and students in a fundamentally fair and equitable manner. Unfortunately, Ms. Mamlet and Ms. VanDeVelde do a great disservice by being disrespectful to a large community of Independent College Advisers, many of whom are needed when the high school counselors are juggling with case loads of 200-300 students each and are unable to keep up with the changing scene of college admissions (either due to the lack of funding or time). Gone are the days when people went to some "quack-independents" who promised admissions to Ivy Leagues--sure there are some of those but if families are careful in their research, they will soon find out that these Independents do not belong to any authentic professional organizations such as the NACAC, HECA or IECA. Most students who come to the authentic professionals are motivated to find their right fit college, explore their own strengths and weaknesses and find the best match for their talents, interests and financial situation. Most independents offer services that are reasonably priced. If Ms. Mamlet and VanDeVelde show more commitment to researching folks on the other side of the spectrum, I am sure that their book will be more enlightening.

Best College Info Book Ever!
Format: Paperback
I have read dozens of college-related books in the past 4 years, and this one ranks the highest by far. Written by industry experts and the authors got a lot of top talent to contribute. Full of real-life advice and useful information that is actually true (I fact-checked this against some other info). I read parts of it out loud to my junior on the plane en route to a college tour, and she actually listened! Humor is always appreciated, and these authors use it without going overboard. Great information, well-presented. A must-read!
