Six Questions Your Once Upon A Child Franchise Financial Model Must Answer

We built this franchise unit financial model using our own research to help you navigate the complexities of a resale retail environment. The model comes pre-populated with data showing a year-one EBITDA of $143,000 and a clear path to $453,000 by year five, all while accounting for the specific franchise royalty fee structure and marketing fund requirements. You can easily edit these assumptions to reflect your specific site selection and local labor market.

When does the store turn a profit?

This unit is projected to reach its break-even point in April 2026, just four months after launching. Net profit grows as you scale, with year-one EBITDA starting at $143,000 and expanding as inventory purchases (COGS) drop from 11.5% to 9.5% of sales. To be fair, staying profitable requires tight managment of the $15,800 monthly fixed costs before you even pay a single sales associate.

Improve Profitability

  • Optimize inventory turnover ratio retail
  • Reduce packaging waste to 1%
  • Control variable supply spending
[dynamic_pic9]

How much capital is required?

You will need approximately $392,000 in total initial investment for hard costs like leaseholds and fixtures, but the model suggests a minimum cash requirement of $846,000 to handle the ramp-up. This covers the $25,000 franchise fee and the $185,000 build-out needed for a premium boutique environment. Here's the quick math: your biggest cash outlays happen in the first 90 days before the first customer walks in.

Major Capital Uses

  • Leasehold Improvements: $185,000
  • Store Fixtures and Racks: $95,000
  • Franchise Fee: $25,000
  • Displays and Furniture: $28,000
[dynamic_pic10]

What is the expected ROI?

The internal rate of return (IRR) for this unit is estimated at 3.56%, with a return on equity (ROE) of 1.01. You can expect a payback period of 4 years, which is standard for a retail franchise investment analysis spreadsheet for small business. While the IRR seems modest, the cash flow scales defintely well, reaching $453,000 in annual EBITDA by the fifth year of operation.

Investor Metrics

  • 4-year payback period
  • 3.56% Internal Rate of Return
  • 1.01 Return on Equity
[dynamic_pic11]

What is the break-even point?

The monthly break-even point occurs in month 4, driven primarily by the high volume of apparel and toy sales which account for $337,500 in combined year-one revenue. Your ability to hit this target depends on managing variable costs in a resale franchise, specifically the 1.8% payment processing fees and the $11,150 monthly fixed overhead. If your rent stays at $8,200, volume is your best friend.

Reach Break-Even Faster

  • Boost apparel sales volume
  • Minimize pre-opening labor costs
  • Negotiate tiered rent start
[dynamic_pic12]

What is the cash runway?

The lowest cash point occurs in April 2026, coinciding with your break-even month, where you'll need at least $846,000 on hand to feel safe. Planning operational expenses for a new retail franchise means accounting for the $15,000 monthly salary for the management team during the early months. Still, having a cash buffer is vital if the build-out takes longer than the planned 60 days.

Protect Cash Flow

  • Phase fixture purchases
  • Delay assistant manager hire
  • Manage initial marketing spend
[dynamic_pic13]

How do scenarios change outcomes?

In a High scenario, hitting $1.25M in revenue earlier than year five would significantly boost your IRR and shorten the 4-year payback. The model shows that even a 10% swing in revenue dramatically impacts the year-one $143,000 EBITDA because fixed costs like the $8,200 rent don't move. Estimating revenue for a secondhand children's clothing franchise requires looking at these Low vs High cases to understand your downside risk.

Hit the High Case

  • Increase average ticket size
  • Drive repeat loyalty visits
  • Maximize sales per square foot

Beyond worth it!
Color: Black
Before this, I used battery powered frothers and couldn’t keep up with replacing the batteries. As soon as the batteries began to lose their charge, the frothers weren’t powerful enough. Somehow, this doesn’t begin to lose its charge until the charge runs out. I’ve spent a fraction of the price buying this as I did on batteries. I got this in Aug 2024. It’s amazing and incredibly powerful. In a year, I charged it 3 times. If you don’t get the froth you’re looking for, I’d suggest you watch a video on how to froth correctly. I learned there’s a proper technique that really improves the outcome. It made a world of difference for me. The charge time advertised is not correct. It lasts much much much longer on one charge. After the charge died, I charged it for maybe an hour and then I used it to whisk thick body butter. When washing it, I got it too wet. The motor wouldn’t stop running, so I called it a loss and put it outside to let it run until it stopped. It ran for hours. Sometime during the night it shut off. The next day, I pressed the on button again and it ran the entire day. It has a warranty, but I never registered mine, so I don’t mind paying for a replacement since it is so inexpensive. I’m writing this review now because I liked it so much that I just purchased another one to replace it. I hope this helps. If you’re unsure: It is incredibly powerful, but has two speeds, so one will work for any frothing needs. The price is unbeatable, much less than you’ll spend on batteries. The charge lasts unbelievably long and stays just as powerful until the charge runs out. It is detachable, so washing it is really simple. Just wipe the top part.

Mostly good, with one design flaw - See Update - Five stars for new version!
Color: White
*I bumped my rating from 3 to 4 stars because of the customer service. The seller's response to customer reviews is excellent. This particular model (MF05) still gets 3 stars from me, but the new version (MF09) is definitely a 5 star product. See update below.* Second Update: I received the new version (FoodVille MF09), and really like it. It solves the variable speed problem. Three speeds are still available, however, each has its own on/off switch, so no more cycling through. It also comes with an additional hook attachment for mixing powders with liquid, as well as a charging stand. It is a few dollars more, but most definitely worth it! Buy the MF09 version, https://amazon.com/FoodVille-Rechargeable-Stainless-Cappuccino-Bulletproof/dp/B0872RLB4V/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=foodville+mf09&qid=1595520925&sr=8-1 I recommend buying from this seller (FoodVille). They are very attentive and customer oriented. I will be leaving a 5 star review for that frother! Update: FoodVille contacted me to let me know they have a new version of this frother that addresses the variable speed issue I've complained about. They are sending me the new frother, and I will post a review on the updated version soon. The new version is FoodVille MF09, so be sure to check it out as it sounds better than the MF05 I have purchased and reviewed here. In addition to fixing the speed issue, they have included a charging dock. I've had this frother for a few months now. Overall, it works as well as my Aerolatte hand-held that died. I like that it is rechargeable, since I went through quite a lot of batteries before. My problem with this is the way you have to cycle through the speeds, rather than just selecting the one you want. This is a problem because sometimes I'll need to stop it before I'm finished and then when I resume it is on the next faster speed, which causes the milk to fly out of the glass before I can get back to the lower setting. I have ruined at least one shirt with stains from the flying milk. Also, because of where the on/off button is, and because of its sensitivity, I sometimes turn it off accidentally, which of course causes the milk to slosh everywhere getting back to the lower setting. I really wish you could just pick a speed, even if that means just a high and a low. I'm thinking of going back to a single speed frother. All but the lowest speed seems to be too strong to froth milk anyway. So, it works, it has good battery life, but cycling through the speeds has been a problem for me. I'll keep using it for now, but may be in the market for something different soon.

Perfect for home baristas
Color: White
I recently purchased this milk frother, and it has completely elevated my daily coffee routine. It’s incredibly easy to use—just pour in your milk, press a button, and within seconds you have perfectly smooth, creamy foam. Whether I’m making a latte, cappuccino, or even a matcha, the texture comes out consistently rich and velvety every time. What I love most is how quiet and fast it is compared to other frothers I’ve tried. It heats the milk evenly without burning it, and the foam holds its shape beautifully. Cleanup is also a breeze thanks to the non-stick interior—just a quick rinse and wipe, and it’s ready to go again. The design is sleek and compact, so it doesn’t take up much counter space, and it looks great next to my coffee setup. Overall, this frother delivers excellent performance, convenience, and quality. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys café-style drinks at home.

Best Frother in this Category!!!
Color: Black
This is by far the best frothers the money that I have purchased. It has two speeds, with the second being very powerful. These units charge quickly and they hold a charge for a long time. The attachments are sturdy and they do not warp and spin off-center like many others. I would also like to say that Foodville has a very generous warranty. I had one unit stop working after eight months and they replaced it promptly within two weeks.. I highly recommend!

No Other Option Needed (and no batteries required!)
Color: Black, Color: Black
The price is good, it works great, the usb c charging is such a plus, I’d definitely recommend if someone needs a frother. The rechargeable feature is key for long term value. A more niche use case I have is using this to mix my protein mix powder with water on days I don’t want to make a whole smoothie. It’s easy and lets me silently, even at night when a blender would be too loud, mix powdered drinks by hand. The size is good too, it fits into cupboards easily.
