Originating at the British headquarters of the Indian Army Corps of Engineers in Roorkee, India, it was designed to be mobile, durable and practical. Because the chair has no fixed joinery, the legs and rails move, enabling it to adapt to uneven ground. The chair’s leather components tighten the legs towards one another as weight is applied to it. The act of sitting in it reinforces the structure of the chair.
